Halloween is a fun time of year that involves decorating the house, planning parties, picking costumes, and eating immense amounts of candy. As you may have already guessed, the smile isn’t quite fond of this holiday, especially because of the risks of dental issues. However, if you prepare now, that doesn’t have to be the case. So, to help you prepare your child’s smile for Halloween, our dentist, Dr. Josh Walker, has some tips for you.
First, make sure your child cares for their smile now by keeping up on oral hygiene. Their routine should include brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing daily. As they do these things, they should use a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, dental floss, and antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash that have all been approved by the American Dental Association. As they clean their teeth and gums, their smile will be strengthened and prepared.
Second, bring your child into our office for their six-month checkup if they are due for one. This appointment can help prepare your child’s smile because the treatments involved thoroughly clean the teeth and gums, strengthen and nourish the chompers, and detect as well as treat any dental issues. These treatments can reduce the chances of your child suffering or worsening dental issues on Halloween.
Third, educate your child about the effects candy has on their teeth. Make sure they know that the acidic and sugary treats can cause enamel erosion and cavities. Then, explain that this is why you are going to limit their candy consumption that night. This will lessen the blow on Halloween when they realize you won’t let them eat all their candy at once.
