General & Family Dentistry Services
Orofacial pain is any kind of ache, soreness or discomfort in the face, mouth, jaw or oral area. If you’re suffering from orofacial pain, please call us immediately to identify any underlying dental problems and help relieve your pain. Orofacial pain is often related to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Types of orofacial pain include:
- Neurovascular pain
- Neuropathic pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Some sleep disorders, like snoring or sleep apnea
- Pain or tenderness in the jaw
- Toothaches
- Burning mouth or tongue syndrome
- Muscle spasms
- Chronic pain
To diagnose and treat orofacial pain, our dentists may order certain lab studies, review historical data and conduct a thorough examination. Our dental associates will do everything possible to help you manage the symptoms and treat the underlying cause to alleviate your pain. We’ll develop a treatment plan that may include surgery, devices or medication depending on your situation.
If necessary, we will work with other specialists to manage your pain and restore your oral health.

During routine exams, we clean your teeth, removing the plaque and tartar that builds up over time. In addition to checking for cavities, our dentists also check for signs of gum disease.
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a progressive condition primarily caused by harmful bacteria found in plaque. As bacteria worsen, your gums can become inflamed and even infected. In early stages, your gum tissue might appear red or swollen or bleed when you floss. As the infection advances, it can damage the underlying support of your gum tissue, and your gums can pull away from your teeth, causing loose teeth. Untreated periodontal disease can result in bone loss, tooth loss and gum recession.
Common symptoms of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums bleed when flossing
- Loose teeth
- Pain when chewing
- Persistent bad breath
- Receding gums
If you have periodontal disease, our dentists will recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include additional professional dental cleanings, improved at-home oral hygiene, antibiotics, deep dental cleaning (called scaling and root planing) or gum surgery, depending on the progression of your condition.
If you have any symptoms of gum disease, call our office at 785-539-5949 to schedule a dental exam and learn more about your periodontic care options.
The goal of preventive dental care is to keep your mouth and smile healthy. Maintaining good oral health is a vital component over overall well-being. Our preventive dental services help keep teeth healthy and address common dental issues before they cause further damage such as tooth decay, periodontal disease (gum disease) and other conditions.
From routine dental cleanings to dental sealants, visit our dental clinic regularly to ensure that we can detect, diagnose and treat any signs of damage before they become more extensive and painful.
To do your part in preventing cavities and tooth decay, we recommend following these guidelines to maintain good oral health at home between your dentist visits:
- Brush and floss your teeth every day. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste with fluoride.
- Maintain a balanced, healthy diet and limit the amount of very sugary or acidic foods you eat.
- Visit our office at least twice a year for a routine teeth cleaning and dental exam.
- Ask our team about dental sealants and fluoride treatments to see if your smile would benefit from these interventions.

At the center of our teeth is a soft, living tissue called dental pulp. If the pulp is damaged or infected from cavities, cracks or other trauma, it can lead to sensitivity, pain, swelling or even the death of the affected tooth. If your dental pulp becomes damaged or infected, we may recommend root canal treatment — commonly called a root canal — to help preserve your natural teeth.
When injury or decay deep inside the tooth is left untreated, the tooth may die, requiring a tooth extraction. A root canal can help restore the health of the tooth, avoiding the need for extraction. During root canal treatment, our skilled dentists remove the infected and injured tissues from within the tooth, clean the tooth and fill it with a medicated material. We then cap the tooth with a restoration, such as a dental crown, to return it to its original shape and structure. In most cases, a root canal can be completed in only one or two visits to our office.
Root canal treatment has a reputation for being a painful treatment, but we’re often able to provide this therapy with minimal discomfort thanks to advanced techniques, tools and anesthesia. We know this can be a stressful procedure, and our entire team works hard to make you comfortable. We will also provide you with detailed post-treatment care instructions so that you can properly take care of your smile as it heals.

While our dentists make every effort to protect and preserve your natural teeth, sometimes we may need to remove a tooth. Our dental associates typically recommend tooth extractions if you are suffering from an infected or heavily damaged tooth. If an extraction is necessary, we can provide replacement options such as dental implants to ensure you maintain a healthy, confident smile.
A tooth extraction might be necessary if:
- A severe infection has destroyed a significant portion of your tooth or the supporting bone structure
- Serious decay has damaged your tooth beyond repair
- Crowded teeth don’t fit properly fit in your mouth
We use great care and skill when performing tooth extractions to ensure that your experience is as comfortable and painless as possible. We will provide you with detailed post-treatment care instructions so that you can properly take care of your smile as it heals.

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars that grow in the back of your mouth in your late teens and early 20s, although the timeline varies from person to person. Removing wisdom teeth is a common dental procedure. Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth taken out, but our dental associates may recommend removing your wisdom teeth if you have any of the following issues.
- Lack of Space: Many people's mouths are too small to accommodate the extra molars, which can lead to overcrowding and push other teeth out of alignment.
- Impaction: Wisdom teeth often grow in at odd angles or get stuck (impacted) in the gums or jawbone, which can cause pain, swelling or infection.
- Decay or Gum Disease: Wisdom teeth are harder to clean because of their location, making them more prone to cavities or gum disease.
- Preventative Removal: Some dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth early, even if they aren’t causing problems yet, to avoid potential issues down the line.
We use great care and skill when removing wisdom teeth to ensure that your experience is as comfortable and painless as possible. We will provide you with detailed post-treatment care instructions so that you can properly take care of your mouth as it heals.
